JK Rowling Anti-Fan Club

Join performance artist, researcher and ex-Rowlingphile Octagon Norman in a Fan Club for the Tran Club.

We all know and hate Queen of Twitter: Terfy Rowling. But how can we find modes of moving on when the things we love are erasing us?

Many trans and queer people have navigated their identity through the Potterverse: be that through meeting friends in the online community, identifying with shape-shifter Tonks, or writing a fanfic in which Harry gets knocked up by Draco (#Drarry 5ever). So how do we hold Rowling to account when the world of her creation has helped form our identities?

The JK Rowling Anti-Fan Club has two elements:

Talk and chat - Neoliberal Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Crimes of JKR

Drawing from their most recent paper exploring racism in the Potterverse, So, is Hermione black now?Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: passing for canon, Octagon will open the workshop with a big old, participatory rant about Rowling and her tragic approaches to representation in the franchise. Ever felt wronged by JKR? Time to let it out, babes.

Defence against the Dark Arts: Exercises in Cancellation

Octagon will be dusting off the cobwebs from their internationally toured show Breaking Up with JK Rowling to open up space for our own new meanings from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter that can't be co-opted back into the economy of the franchise. Want to write a fanfic in which JKR funds your transition? Want to eat a page of a Harry Potter book? We're not gonna stop you.

This workshop will be socially distanced. Please bring your own mask, pen/pencil and paper/notebook.
